Party Identification: Efficient Heuristic of Systematic Bias?

چکیده

Using a new dataset that takes advantage of a novel survey design, I accomplish a joint estimation of citizens’ policy views and legislators’ ideal points on the same scale. I analyze several important questions about people’s preferences, perceptions and voting behavior using the case of the 2004 presidential election. In contrast to many earlier works, I show that most people do in fact have some level of policy ideology that has an important effect on their voting behavior. The influence of party identification, however, is also quite strong. Judging from the baseline of Downsian policy voting, I show that independents, even those with lower levels of political sophistication, perform quite well on average, and engage in essentially unbiased spatial policy voting. Partisans of similar levels of sophistication, by contrast, are systematically pushed away from more rational decision rules and seem to be making biased choices in translating their policy preferences into vote choices. On the whole, it seems clear that party identification operates more as a systematic bias than a profitable heuristic. [DRAFT, PLEASE DO NOT CITE OR SHARE WITHOUT PERMISSION]

Issue Bias: How Issue Coverage and Media Bias Affect Voter Perceptions of Elections

It is virtually a truism in American politics that a focus on some issue areas during election campaigns, like national security or traditional values, redounds to the benefit of Republicans, while emphasis on other areas, like education or social security, benefits Democrats. Political scientists refer to this phenomenon as “issue ownership” (Petrocik 1996, Ansolabehere and Iyengar 1994). To t...

Physiological Responses and Partisan Bias: Beyond Self-Reported Measures of Party Identification

People are biased partisans: they tend to agree with policies from political parties they identify with, independent of policy content. Here, we investigate how physiological reactions to political parties shape bias. Using changes in galvanic skin conductance responses to the visual presentation of party logos, we obtained an implicit and physiological measure of the affective arousal associat...

A Heuristic Algorithm for Nonlinear Lexicography Goal Programming with an Efficient Initial Solution

In this paper,  a heuristic algorithm is proposed in order to solve a nonlinear lexicography goal programming (NLGP) by using an efficient initial point. Some numerical experiments showed that the search quality by the proposed heuristic in a multiple objectives problem depends on the initial point features, so in the proposed approach the initial point is retrieved by Data Envelopment Analysis...

Opus: a Systematic Search Algorithm and Its Application to Categorical Attribute-value Data- Driven Machine Learning

OPUS is a branch and bound search algorithm that enables efficient systematic search through spaces in which the order in which the search operators are applied is not significant. OPUS achieves this by maximising the effect of each pruning action. While it is not possible to guarantee in the general case that any pruning shall occur, when pruning is possible, its effect is maximised. Experimen...

Minimum cost rule enforcement for cooperative database access

In this paper, we consider restricted data sharing between a set of parties that wish to provide some set of online services requiring such data sharing. Each party is assumed to store its data in private relational databases, and is given a set of mutually agreed set of authorization rules that specify access to attributes over individual relations or joins over relations owned by one or more ...
